Lock your door, dim your lights, add some pumpkin spice to whatever you are drinking and light your jack-o’-lanterns. This will be a Halloween you will never forget.
My thoughts
I've never read a Halloween book so close to Halloween and I enjoyed it a lot. I'll be going to the cinema this Saturday, ALL NIGHT. To watch 4 new Horror-movies. This book has me in the mood already. I'm a huge horror fan, the spooky kind, the wtf-kind and especially the gory kind. It's all in this book and I highly recommend this book to read during Halloween times, for all the horror-fans out there.
Pros
- Real gory Horror: Oh, how I love gory horror. I've been telling my boyfriend about the stories I've read in this book and he's like: "Wth are these stories you're reading?!" I just love it so much. There is a great collection of gory stories in this book. That's just the type of horror I enjoy the most.
- Adult book: I have been reading YA a lot the past year. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy those books, but it was refreshing to read an adult book. This is not a book I would recommend for younger teens since it contains a couple of very detailed hardcore sex-scenes and very gory horror as well. If you're one to enjoy these subjects, you should definitely read this book!
- Fast paced: The book contains 18 (if I counted right) short stories. In a short story, you have to keep the pace pretty fast, because you have to tell your story within a limited amount of pages. This way, this book is a pretty quick read, even tough it contains 350+ pages. It's one of the main reasons I like to read short stories once in awhile. Just rushing through, enjoying different writing styles and loving the stories.
- Different stories: It's a BIG compliment for all the writers that helped shape this book. All the stories were different, even though they were all about Halloween and all had the Horror genre. It's a true gift to select the right stories and make sure none of the stories sound the same or have the same plot. Chapeau!
Cons
- Poem: I've been saying this before here on my blog; I'm not a poem-fan. I love stories in Dutch that have bit of rhyme in it. I tried to read the 1 poem in this book, but I just had to skip through. English is not my native language and I think that's the main reason I have no idea what I've been reading, when reading a poem. I don't think this poem was bad, it's not my place to say anything about this poem, I was just sad that I had to skip that one story.
- Not the same quality all over: Some stories were REALLY good and I still remember them right now. Others were not that great and there were a few (maybe 2 or 3) that I didn't like and where I kept wandering off. It's a pro that these were short stories, because you know you won't be reading that story for that long. I was just hoping to highly enjoy all the stories.
Overall
I had so much fun binge-reading these Halloween stories and to read something in one of my favorite genres again. I don't read horror a lot and I do remember now why I love it so much. I highly recommend this book as a Halloween read, to just be creeped out, grossed out and have your own little WTF moment.
