Synopsis
Helena’s life had always been quiet. In fact, she liked it that way. When her childhood friend returns home and tells her that she is the prophesied ruler of the Chosen, those blessed with the gift of magic, her quiet life goes up in flames.

Suddenly Helena finds herself surrounded by a circle of protectors, each having sworn their loyalty to her since her birth. All except for one: her Mate.

It’s not enough that she learn how to use her magic and undergo a trial to prove her worthiness; in order to claim her title, Helena must also find the man who carries the other half of her soul.

My thoughts
I haven't had the urge to keep reading a book in a while. I was reading this during breakfast, during commercial breaks, I fell asleep with this book on the pillow next to me. I loved this book so much and I wanted to keep reading, it could've been double the pages for me! The book reminded me of Court of Mist and Fury in some aspects. I didn't mind, because I loved that book!

Pros
  • Magic: The magic in this book is awesome. It's divided in 5 different types; Spirit, Fire, Water, Air, Earth. I loved the fact that people can also be able to wield two or more different types of magic. I also like the way the magic is explained. A lot of different things are possible and that makes the book very unpredictable.
  • Villain: I'm used to reading thrillers or detective books and getting a POV from the killer or criminal. In this case, you don't know who this is. This book is different. You know exactly who not to trust and are getting a POV as well! I've never seen anything like it in fantasy books, the POV of the villain. I also loved the fact that you know exactly who the villain is and that you keep screaming DON'T TRUST THIS PERSON! This is a very nice twist in the fantasy genre.
  • Plot twists: The plot twists aren't that big in this book, there are little plot twists and I think that's because this book is set up to be a first in a series and a lot of explaining has to be done. There were little plot twists and that kept me triggered and made me want to keep reading.
  • Pacing: There is a lot of explaining to do in this book, because the world is build up and the magic is explained, but the book is not slow! You actually dive right in after maybe a chapter of peace and quiet. This makes me very excited for the next book.
  • Ending: I'm so ready for the next book and it would be an honour if I'd be granted another review copy, because I fell in love with Helena and her world. And this ending... I need to know what will happen next!
Cons
You tell me.

Overall
Such a promising debut and start of another great series that I hope to love one day. I believe this is a must-read for Fantasy lovers out there. The book isn't that long and it can get you into this new world pretty quickly. What are you waiting for? Dive in!
