Synopsis
Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

My thoughts
First of all: I want to thank Fransinda for doing this buddyread with me. I love doing buddyreads, where you can share your thoughts with another booklover while reading. Second of all.. WHAT is this low Goodreads score?! I can't believe it. This book is a big favorite for me, I loved everything about it. I think this book is a hit or run book when it comes to loving it or hating it...

Pros
  • Poetic: My number 1 favorite aspect about this book is the poetic way it's written. It's beautiful in a way I can't even describe. It felt like I was there, like I was feeling the things the characters were feeling and tasting the things they were tasting. I love how the author uses repetition in her writing, it's so beautiful.
  • Mysterious: The mystery in this book is amazing. A hero, a villain and a liar. You think you've figured it out, but you know you probably don't and it's so much fun to discover what is actually going on and to read towards the ending of the book. The way the mystery unfolds is great and I love how it's predictable and not at all at the same time.
  • Little story: The story would be a story that I would call "a pretty little story". It's not big, it doesn't consume a big plot and a big amount of time and great wars and huge problems. It's actually the opposite and it's kept small with very real feelings and that's what I like.
  • Curious about other books: I'm so curious about other books from this author right now. I'm sure I could pick out her book from 40 others, the way she writes, it's amazing. I found out that this was her first book that was translated in Dutch and I'm a bit surprised because I do believe she could become one of my favorite authors. I can perfectly read in English myself as well, just knowing this is her first book translated into Dutch is weird to me.
Cons
  • You like it or you don't: I think that you will fall in love with this book and it will be a favorite or you won't understand it at all and find the repetitions and the vague way of describing things to be annoying. This book is, like I said, a hit or run.
Overall
I think Fransinda and I would've been able to read this book in 1 sitting. Sadly I also have a life and I had to work and stuff *grumble*. The book was a favorite for the both of us. The poetic way it's written, the way it's small and big at the same time together with the mystery is a treat to read!

Other opinions on this book
"Mesmerizing, suspenseful... Hard to put down... You'll be dying to get to the end and figure out what's what. And then you'll be flipping back through to see how you missed the clues. Wink Poppy Midnight is a quick and delightful read."
- The New York Daily News

"Wink Poppy Midnight features three strongly delineated first-person narrators. Dark and compelling, it challenges the reader in the best way."
- Kenny Brechner, PW ShelfTalker

Memorable quotes from this book
