Synopsis
In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

My thoughts
First of all; Thanks to Rachida for doing this buddyread with me. We read The Assassin's Blade together and I loved it. I'm a big Sarah J. Maas fan since I've read all the ACOTAR books, and I wondered if I would love her writing style, characters, world building and plot twists as much in a different series. And I have to tell you; I'm still very much team Sarah!

Pros
  • Celaena: Celaena really stole my heart in the novella books that became for this book, but next to that, she is also a very believable character. She has been going through a lot in the novellas and that really reflects in her character right now. This is something that's so strong and it also kinda rewards you for reading the novellas. What I also love about her, is that she's fierce but she's not a stone, she has a lot of emotions and weak spots, although she doesn't always show them.
  • Balance: The balance in this book between romance, action, tension and mystery is great. I couldn't wait to see how the plot would come to an end. Some things were predictable, but others totally weren't and I'm sure this is the buildup for a great series.
  • Novella added something: I'm always glad when you're rewarded for reading a novella. Rachida and I both decided to read the novella first and I love how Celaena often refers back to those older times.
  • Writing style: I'm totally in love with Sarah J's writing style. The ACOTAR books are sometimes big and scary, but I always rushed through, mainly because of her easy going writing style. I've seen that some of the books for this series are big as well, but now I know I'll easily finish them.
  • Can't wait what's next: With how this book is ending.... Shit is about to hit the fan. I can feel the tension rushing through the final pages and I know that the next book will surely build up to a great plot again.
Cons
I dunno...

Overall
I can't imagine any fantasy lover not liking Sarah J. Maas' books. The writing style is so easy going, the characters are easy to love or to hate. The plot is always a big mystery and even though you're able to point out little things, you're always wondering what's going to happen next. I've never even giving one of her books below 5-star rating... Call me a FANGIRL!

Other opinions on this book
"A teenage assassin, a rebel princess, menacing gargoyles, supernatural portals and a glass castle prove to be as thrilling as they sound... Celaena is still just a teenager trying to forge her way, giving the story timelessness. The co mingling of comedy, brutality and fantasy evokes a rich alternate universe with a spitfire young woman as it's brightest star."

Memorable quotes from this book
"No. I can survive well enough on my own - if given the proper reading material."

"We all bear scars... Mine just happen to be more visible than most."

"My name is Celaena Sardothien. But it makes no difference if my name's Celaena or Lillian or Bitch, because I'd still beat you, no matter what you call me."

Thanks for reading!
