Synopsis
With the Land of Five being systematically torn apart by war, Ignis witch, Lilith Lace, has a number of problems before her. Captured in the Battle of Ignis by The Elemental Coven, she must deal with the recent deaths of her loved ones as a prisoner of war. Mind torn between escaping and giving up completely, Lilith is presented with a new surprise—infamous rouge witch, Willow, is not only alive and well but has a larger role in Lilith’s childhood accident than she ever imagined.

Everything’s changing. Friends are becoming enemies and enemies are becoming friends. Will Lilith finally get to the bottom of her past among the ranks of The Elemental Coven or will they hurt her worse than anything she’s encountered so far?

My thoughts
When I read the first book by Kayla Krantz in this series; The Council, I was instantly hooked. I loved the worldbuilding, the cliffhanger and the fact that there was a lot of mystery going on. Also, the book didn't have INSTA LOVE, what you saw/see a lot in Fantasy and YA books. I was very happy to receive an email from Kayla, that the second book was finished too, and I enjoyed reading it, just like the first!

Pros
  • Fierceness: Lilith is fierce. I love how she is fighting for what she's worth in this book and how she isn't afraid to back down. She really is a strong female character and I'm not ready to say goodbye. Yay for the third book in this series!
  • Fast paced: So much is going on. In every chapter there is a revelation or something happening that's good for the pace in the story. It's never dull and I like how Kayla sometimes moves forward a week, so that the story stays believable.
  • Writing: It's just SO GOOD. It's so easy to read, I never cringed because of a word that's used too often or because the grammar has a lot of errors. I remember feeling the same way about the first book and it's one of the main reasons I decided to also read this second book.
  • Ending: Kayla Krantz is a MASTER in endings. I remember the first book ending with a cliffhanger and this second book has a very strong ending as well. She is not afraid to leave an ending open and have you waiting for more to come.
Cons
  • Legs collapsing: In the beginning of the story, Lilith's legs collapse and she falls down, because of something that she discovers. I felt like that happend a bit too much and it didn't match her fierce personality. I was glad that it didn't happen that much after those scenes.
  • What happened?: I'm one of those readers that just FORGETS a lot of important things that happen in the first book. It's not because of the author, it's because of me. It takes away some of the joy while reading, because when an author refers to something happening in the first book, I can't remember and it makes me feel so dumb. I sometimes re-read first books in series, but not always and I'd love for authors to give a little summary at the start of the story as of what happened in the book or books before. It's just one of my quirks, because I read so many books... So this is not a con just for this book. It's something that happens to me while reading series over a long period of time.
Overall
Still a Kayla Krantz fan. Her writing and worldbuilding are great. I love how she throws in little plot twists during the story and the best are her endings. I'm so excited to get to the end of the book, because EVERYTHING can still happen. She does end with cliffhangers and I need that once in a while!

Memorable quotes from this book
"I like my scars, they show I fight back."

"Most people assume that life is like a game of chess, each decision cold, calculating and ultimately leading toward one large goal - our purpose in life, whatever that may be. I've never agreed with that idea. To me, like is like Jenga; we stack decisions on top of one another without a guide or any real idea of what we're doing. One wrong move causes it to all come crashing down, leaving you to deal with the ruins your life has become."

"You can't blame yourself for the decisions others make."

Thanks for reading!
