Synopsis
Twenty-eight years ago, Charlotte and Samantha Quinn's happy small-town family life was torn apart by a terrifying attack on their family home. It left their mother dead. It left their father—Pikeville's notorious defense attorney—devastated. And it left the family fractured beyond repair, consumed by secrets from that terrible night.

Twenty-eight years later, Charlotte has followed in her father's footsteps to become a lawyer herself—the ideal good daughter. But when violence comes to Pikeville again, and a shocking tragedy leaves the whole town traumatized, Charlotte is plunged into a nightmare. Not only is she the first witness on the scene, but it's a case that unleashes the terrible memories she's spent so long trying to suppress--because the shocking truth about the crime that destroyed her family nearly thirty years ago won't stay buried forever.

My thoughts
Thanks to Arjen for doing another buddyread with me. It was so much fun to share my love for Karin Slaughter novels with somebody else. I met Karin Slaughter a while ago and she told, during the interview, that The Good Daughter is something different. It's dark, and it's not from a police POV, which she tends to do in a while. But the Queen of Crime can write it all!

Trigger Warning: There is a lot of violence in this book and a rape scene that is described into detail. Please make sure you are able to handle those before reading.

Pros
  • Not just police POV: I see a lot of authors who write from a Police POV and don't do anything else. I love how Karin Slaughter sometimes mixes it up and writes from the victims point of view. It's a different layer to the story. I'm so glad she's also able to do this, because now I'm pretty sure all books that I touch with her name on it will be 4 stars or more.
  • Brendan Dassey reference: I love how there is a Brendan Dassey reference in this book, because a part of the story really reminded me of that case. I'm such a Making A Murderer fangirl and I was never able to really share it with anyone, and now I could fangirl some more.
  • Characters: So, so, so, so STRONG. The way Karin Slaughter is able to create characters is CRAZY. They are so believable with their flaws and jobs and relationships and just, YES. It was also fun that at some part in the book Arjen chose sides for Charlotte and I did for Samantha. You could like either one of them a bit better.
  • Satisfying: I just love to rush through because I know Karin Slaughter's books are so good and I know what I'll get from them. This story was satisfying and everything that I hoped for.
  • What you expect: I know when I pick up a book by The Queen of Crime, it's going to be good or more than good. I can't even remember if I ever gave a book by Karin Slaughter less than 4 stars. Can't wait to get back into the Will Trent series, because that's next on my list!
Cons
U crazy?

Overall
This book is exactly what I'd hoped for by Karin Slaughter and even more. Not a book from a Police POV, but something else. The story itself is so good, there is a lot of tension and mystery. The characters are amazing and I'm sure any Mystery/Thriller lover would rush through. #1 Karin Slaughter Fangirl, OUT.

Other opinions on this book
"Her characters, plot and pacing are unrivaled among thriller writers, and if you haven't yet read her, this is the moment."
- Michael Connelly

"Karin Slaughter has - by far - the best name of all of us mystery novelists. More to the point, The Good Daughter is Karin Slaughter's most ambitious, most emotional, and best novel. So far, anyway."
- James Patterson

Memorable quotes from this book
"Nothing ever truly faded. Time only dulled the edges."

"Many people must have told you that you are lucky to be alive. I think you would have been lucky had you not been shot in the first place."

Thanks for reading!
I'd love to talk books, so let me know what you think about this book/review.
