Synopsis
In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.
In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

My thoughts
Thanks to Arjen, over at Backlogblog, for reading this awesome book with me. I heard from a very reliable source that it's our 10th buddyread together. I'm so happy to celebrate that number with this GREAT BOOK. If you're a thriller fan, and like "kinda-sick" books by Mr. King, you will definitely like this book. It's not that much horror as you might be used to, but there are definitely some sick and gory parts.
Pros
- Writing style: The writing style was flowing so easily. I had the feeling that I was INSIDE the heads of our two main characters. You could read their thoughts, their feelings and the way they experienced everything that happened. It was a great choice to write it that way. I don't think it would've been such a strong book from a third person POV.
- Sick: I love Stephen King because he writes books like NO ONE else. He is not afraid to go a little further, to give you those details you didn't really want to know. I just know that I will be shocked when I read a book by him and sometimes I just really need that!
- Loved to read it: This book was so much FUN to read. You probably think I'm crazy now, if you pick up a book that contains murder and incest and racism... But it was a rollercoaster ride, plus the book is so easily written and I couldn't put it down.
- Ending: I had trouble putting the book down, but after 70% it felt like it was glued to my hand. I wanted to know what was going to happen and I HAD to keep reading. You know a book is good when you have that feeling. I'm so glad more books are to come in this trilogy.
- Referring to own books: You have to be a KING to just refer to your own books in your book. Loved it.
Cons
Nop.
Overall
You have to like books by Stephen King, because he is that one author that will go over your boundaries. You know that you will be shocked, or scared no matter what. You also know that you will get the thrills and will be shocked or scared. I just love it so much. It's addicting!
Memorable quotes from this book
"Life is a crap carnival with shit prizes."
"Creepy as hell. You ever see that TV movie about the clown in the sewer?"
