Synopsis
When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.
Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds.

My thoughts
Thanks to Arjen for, literally, DRAGGIN me through this book. I had such a struggle to finish this, and I'm sure if I was reading it alone, I would've DNF-ed this book. I felt like this book was way to repetitive and the book didn't grab me like I wanted it to. I remember all those years ago when I was a huge fan of the movie. But this book really was a big miss for me.

Pros
  • Adventure: This book is one big adventure. Eragon had a quest that he is determined to fulfill. He takes you on a journey through the country and together you (mainly) travel a lot and meet new people, creatures and lands. If you're a fan of adventure books, this might be exactly what you like.
  • Whole new world: I love it if authors come up with a whole new world, including the map. That's the case in this book. I was tracking where Eragon is on the map the whole time, and that was fun for me.

Cons
  • More of the same: This book just felt like more of the same and not original at all. The book consist of a problem, Eragon flees, gets more answers, another problem, flee and travel again, another problem, and so on. Somewhere in between Eragon faints 3 or 4 times which is awfully convenient. Nope, the repetitiveness in this book really made it hard to get through for me.
  • Writing style: The writing style just felt very bland to me. I did not care about Eragon or any other character in this book to be honest. Only Saphira maybe. I felt like the characters just lacked depth and personality and the overall writing style didn't make up for it. The writing style also made me read slower and I don't know exactly why, but sometimes it's just not working for me.
Overall
I actually switched to Audiobook when I really couldn't do it anymore. My buddy had already finished and I felt obliged to also finish this book. I also didn't want to DNF with 100 pages left. I'm very sure I'm not going to put this book on my shelves and I'm also not going to read any other books in this series.

Thanks for reading!
I'd love to talk books; please let me know what you think about this book review.

  2. Eragon is my favorite book of all time. All 4 books were pretty good read them all they're all pretty good. Written by a 15 year old who is awesome. I enjoyed this book big time. The movie though was trash. The only good thing is they had Jeremy Irons play Brom.
